UX UI design – Online resources and programs for mental health support in Australia

Brief

Murray Parr, an experienced NLP Mental Health Coach, sought to expand his reach and help more people navigate their mental health challenges. While he had a wealth of knowledge and expertise, his existing online presence needed to be improved to attract and engage potential clients. The website lacked a clear user journey, needed to be updated in design, and effectively conveyed his unique value proposition.

UX Research

Before diving into the design, a comprehensive research phase was conducted to understand Murray’s target audience, competitors, and market trends.

Demographics

In Australia between age 25 to 55, stress and anxiety are prevalent mental health challenges, affecting millions of individuals across various age groups and demographics. With the increasing pressures of modern life, including work-related stress, financial instability, and personal relationships, many Australians struggle to manage these mental health issues effectively. Despite the availability of resources, there remains a significant gap in personalized support that resonates with the unique cultural and social contexts of Australians.

Problem

Many Australians suffering from stress and anxiety lack access to personalized, culturally relevant mental health support that addresses their specific needs. Existing online resources and programs often provide generic advice and strategies that fail to connect with the lived experiences of Australian individuals. Additionally, there is a growing need for discreet, affordable, and flexible mental health services that Australians can easily access, especially those in rural or remote areas where traditional therapy options are limited.

Solution

There is an opportunity to create an online mental health coaching program. This program would offer personalized, culturally relevant support for managing stress and anxiety, utilizing NLP techniques and other proven strategies. The service should be accessible, affordable, and flexible, allowing users to engage with the content and coaching at their convenience. By addressing the unique needs of Australians, this program can fill a critical gap in mental health services, helping individuals lead healthier, more balanced lives.

User Persona

Created user persona: Individuals aged 25-55, struggling with stress and anxiety, looking for practical and effective mental health solutions.

Usability Study

Collected feedback from existing clients to understand their journey and what they valued most about Murray’s services.

Competitor Feature Audit

I selected features to analyze based on what Murray Parr’s mental health coaching platform would need to be successful.

My evaluation of how each competitor handled relevant features led to several key insights, the most important of which was that Murray’s platform needed to be intuitive enough for users to navigate without special training, yet comprehensive enough to effectively address the diverse mental health needs of his clients.

Planning

Affinity Diagram

Affinity diagram was used to brainstorm all the possible sections within the website. The challenge here was refining the exhaustive potential sections on the website based on what appeals to the target audience.

Low Fidelity Wireframe

Low fidelity wireframe was created to showcase how the content would be laid on the website and is broken down to 3 main sections.

Design and Prototype

Based on the research, the design process was divided into several key phases such as wireframe, visual design, branding, user testing & feedback, and development.

User Interface (UI)

Chose a calming color palette to evoke a sense of trust and relaxation, aligned with Murray’s mission to reduce stress and anxiety.
Design Inception

Direction 1 is focused on conveying a sense of calm, peace, and emotional support. Created a mood board that reflects the idea of nurturing mental well-being, offering a safe space where clients can find solace and guidance.

Direction 2 is designed to communicate strength, empowerment, and the transformative journey of mental health coaching. The logo inspires confidence and reflects the idea of overcoming challenges and achieving personal growth.

The Logo

For the logo, I began by brainstorming and creating several initial sketches, which are shown below. Including Color palette, Typography, Iconography and Font recommendation.

Sketch

In Sketch 1, flowing lines and soft shapes of brain cells evoke a sense of intelligence. However, I felt this approach might be too simplistic. In Sketch 2, I explored the idea of the human head to symbolize growth and the journey toward mental well-being. Sketch 3 featured an abstract tree with brain digital brain cells, representing personal growth and resilience, drawing inspiration from the transformation that Murray’s coaching offers.

High fidelity (Desktop)

The low fidelity wireframe is then converted to the high fidelity wireframe shown below.  The homepage design effectively symbolizes empowerment and progress, resonating with the target audience who are seeking to overcome their mental health challenges.

Responsive Design (Mobile)

The biggest challenge whilst designing for mobile was considering usability on the smaller screens with less real estate. After user testing, this was prevalent in the Pricing page that the CTA need to have a functional form instead of redirecting to contact page.

User Testing & Feedback

I tested both desktop and mobile prototypes with 3 potential users to gain feedback. It was important to gather feedback from both a male and female perspectives so make sure it does not appeal to one gender more than the other. They all agreed that the visual identity connects with them.
